The Ultimate Zomei 100mm Filter Review!

Although we used to cover various lens filters on a regular basis, we have recently turned our focus to other subjects. That said, after seeing a number of people reaching out for advice on the Zomei 100mm filter review we have decided to publish this article covering the Zomei 100mm filter to help any of our readers who are considering purchasing it.

Being a square based ND filter the product is ideal for anyone who is wanting to use a long exposure when capturing their photographs. It is particularly effective at merging the aspect of time and motion with things like waterfalls, sea waves, and steams allowing you to capture that silky smooth looking water.

There are a handful of third-party reviews (click here to read some of them) of the Zomei 100mm lens filter online that you can read to get some independent insights of its performance. Additionally, as many photographers are a little apprehensive when it comes to picking up their first square lens filter we would also like to mention that you can save a little off list price by picking them up second hand (Click here to check for product prices and availability). That said, it is rare these days to find them available second hand.

Performance And Functionality

Although it is not a very popular lens filter system right now, we feel that its performance and functionality are both solid and can provide any photographer with some great performance. In our opinion, the days of the square based lens filters are over as the rotary variable neutral density filters (Click here to check for product prices and availability) are much easier to use and are quickly gaining in popularity.

All in all, though the filter does come with some decent features that can help you get optimal performance out of it with minimal effort such as:-

  • 3 Stop Exposure
  • No Color Cast
  • Smooth finish To Assist With Mounting
  • Zero Distortion Technology
  • 2.3mm Thickness
  • German Schott Glass Filter Element

We would like to quickly mention that the 2.3mm filter elements are very thin when compared to other competing square lens filter units. Not only does this make it easier to mount them in the adapter ring but the smaller size and lighter weight due to the smaller size makes them easier to transport without issue.

Although setting the kit up can be a little tricky if you are not used to using a square based lens filter it can provide some great image quality for long exposure photography once set up. Again though, we still feel that most of our readers would be better off by simply picking up a regular rotary variable neutral density filters (Click here to check for product prices and availability).

Build Quality

In our opinion, the build quality of the Zomei 100mm lens filter set is solid and your purchase will last you for many years to come due to its robust build quality ensuring that it is able to take plenty of punishment over the years without issue. Here are some of the key build quality points that we like about the Zomei 100mm filter:-

  • Double Threaded
  • 18-Layer Super Anti-Reflection Coats
  • Multi-Coated With Everclear Coating
  • Water Repellent Coating
  • Anti-Oil Coating
  • Anti-Dust Coating
  • Anti-Soil Coating
  • Scratch Resistant Technology

As you can see, the team at Zomei have used multiple technologies and coating systems to try and build a robust product that will serve you well while capturing photographs. The lens filter holder system has also been built to the higher possible standards too ensuring that the filter element will be held in place without issue too.

Our Verdict

That concludes our Zomei 100mm filter review and as you can probably tell, we are not that keen on the system and would imaging that the majority of our readers would be better off by simply using a rotary variable neutral density filters (Click here to check for product prices and availability).

That said, we are fully aware that there are some digital photography rigs that require a square filter element and if this is the case for you then the Zomei 100mm can make a great addition to your camera accessories. We feel it will help you capture some great photos with excellent image quality especially when it comes to landscape photography.
