Today we are going to be going over our Yongnuo YN24EX review where we will be sharing our thoughts on both the performance and capabilities of this great little ring flash unit. With it rivaling competing products from Canon and Nikon at a fraction of their prices there is no surprise that the YN24EX is quickly expanding in popularity within the photography community.
We would also like to quickly point out that if you are willing to use a fully refurbished YN24EX (Click here to check for product prices and availability), you can usually save a little bit on the regular list price. That said, this depends on the market and this option is not always available.
Due to its growing user base who seem to be loving the flash unit, it is no surprise that some of the owners have decided to share their own thoughts online via independent reviews (click here to read some of them) that you can read if you wish. If you have time, we would highly recommend that you read some of those reviews as they are published by independent photographers who have chosen to use the Yongnuo YN24EX as their go to, or at least one of their main flash units of choice.
User Interface And Control System
The photograph above shows the main control unit for the YN24EX flash unit and as you can see, it is pretty straight forward and in all honesty, we feel that the majority of people will be able to pick it up and get used to it quickly with minimal practice. That said, we would like to point out that the navigation menu on the YN24EX can be a little different to what most people are used to, even if you are used to using other Yongnuo flash units.
We have seen a few reports and reviews from third-party photographers saying after an hour or so of playing with the navigation menu, they were confident in their abilities with the camera flash and felt they knew their way around it. The rotary dial on the command unit is easy to rotate allowing you to quickly and easily work your way through your navigation menu as required without issue.
Each of the buttons used to allow you to select or tweak your flash settings are also easy to press and will still register even if your flash unit or hands are wet or cold. Although it is definitely expected at the price point of the YN24EX, the backlit screen keeps the displayed text very clear when in low light conditions making it very easy to see the options on the menu and make the correct setting selection.
Performance And Functionality
Before we get into the performance and functionality, we just want to quickly go over the included accessories with your purchase as we feel it will make it easier to explain the functionality that picking up the YN24EX can offer. At the time of writing, the following are included with your purchase as standard:-
- The YN24EX flash Speedlite.
- Two actual flash heads.
- Four adaptor rings, one 52mm, one 58mm, one 67mm, and one 72mm.
- The mounting ring for the flash heads.
You are able to use the items to come up with some pretty unique lighting solutions for your flash photography to capture some pretty unique looking photographs with ease. Each of the flash heads are also fully tripod mountable as shown in the image above so you are able to remove them from the mounting ring and mount them on a tripod if you wish.
The key features that the Yongnuo YN24EX supports include:-
- E-TTL Flash
- Exposure Compensation
- Rear-curtain sync
- FE Lock
- Modeling Light
- LED-based focusing
These features allow you to heavily customize the performance of the flash as you require for each of your photography sessions. If you are doing model based portrait photography outside of a studio without using lamp lighting or strobe flashes then these ring flash units offer a great alternative.
The provide great lighting distribution all across your subject helping you capturing high-quality photographs to ensure that your client is happy. On top of this, if you are involved in professional food photography or product photography then the YN24EX can provide some excellent light distribution for those niches too as well as many more.
Our main dislike about the YN24EX is shown in the image above. If you are one of our regular readers then you will know that we absolutely hate the two by two battery insertions as they lead to quicker overheating in our opinion and its an outdated method. We feel the linear (shown in the photograph below) or a single battery solution is much better.
As you can see in the photograph above, each of the batteries are linearly placed into the flash unit and it can help prevent overheating issues.
Anyway, that said, the overall build quality of the YN24EX is excellent in our opinion, especially when you factor in how cheap the flash unit it. The adapter rings are solid and come in some of the most popular thread sizes ensuring that you can use the flash rig with a large number of popular camera rigs right now.
That concludes our Yongnuo YN24EX review and we think that picking the YN24EX up can help improve your flash photography, especially in some specific photography niches. Adding the YN24EX to your camera accessories allow you to quickly come up with some unique lighting solutions for your location that would otherwise not be available when using a regular camera flash unit.
The video below offers an additional third-party, independent review for the Yongnuo YN24EX to offer our readers an independent opinion of the product.
