In this article, we will be taking a look at what we feel are the best portrait lenses for Nikon d3100 cameras currently available on the market right now. We always see a number of d3100 owners reaching out each month for advice on what lenses they should be picking up for their camera. We hope that this article will help any of our readers that find themselves in this same situation.
Although some people use variable zoom lenses for their portrait photograph, we have settled on two fixed focal length prime lenses. Both of these lenses are very popular amongst the community and have earned excellent reputations over the years, they have also proven to be very popular with people for portrait photography too!
The Nikon AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G Lens
The camera’s performance is great in low light conditions with it offering quick image capturing with excellent image quality. Although many of the portraits that you will be taking are probably in something like a studio or a prepared location where you can use beneficial lighting, it is nice to know that your lens of choice can hold its own when lighting is not favorable too.
The lens also offers sharp, crisp, and clean photographs even when you take photographs in quick succession as shown in the example photograph below.
The Nikon AF-S DX 35mm also comes with a minimum focal length of only 35 millimeters allowing you to get your camera rig close to your subject to capture some really unique portraits when possible. The manual focus ring on the lens is also smooth and very responsive allowing you to quickly and easily tweak the focus of your subject before capturing the photograph allowing you to get the best possible image each time.
Depending on your plans for the lens, you may want to further customize it by using one of the many types of lens filter that are on the market. The Nikon AF-S DX 35mm comes with a filter thread size of 52 millimeters and if you are in the market for a filter we would highly recommend you check out the Gobe 52mm Filter range (Click here to check for product prices and availability). Due to innovative production processes, Gobe are able to offer excellent quality filters at very low prices.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Lens
The fast f/1.8 aperture offers you excellent performance even in low light or poor light conditions enabling you to capture some stunning photographs no matter the light. Considering the price of the lens this is great as you can rest assured that you will be able to offer a client the best image quality available without needing to break the bank.
The photograph below is a good example of the type of photograph that you will be able to capture with your Nikon d3100 when using a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Lens with it.
For the less camera savvy of our readers, the Nikon AF-S 50mm natively fits your d3100 right out the box. We will always prefer a lens that natively fits your cameras lens mount over any lens that needs an adaptor to fit. In our opinion, a native mount offers a higher overall image quality for your photography sessions with less chance of the adaptor causing problems.
One of our favorite things about this lens is how easy it is for you to get a natural background blur for your portraits with a natural depth of field. Although not everyone’s style, if you are a fan of having heavy bokeh on your portrait background, this lens is going to make your life so much easier.
All in all, we feel that the Nikon AF-S 50mm is an excellent lens for your Nikon d3100. It is budget friendly, offers great performance, has a very good reputation within the community, and it will natively fit your Nikon d3100 without having to purchase any third-party adapters. We would highly recommend that our readers check out this lens further when looking for something to improve your portrait photography without needing to break the bank.
