After putting out so much content based around the a6000 we always keep out eyes open for new problems the a6000 community may be facing. Recently, we have seen a number of people reaching out for advice on the best lens for food photography for a Sony a6000 and we decided to publish this article to help our readers.
The thing with food photography is that your own personal style and your client’s needs will come into play on what lens you need to be using. Additionally, a 1:1 ratio isn’t really necessary in our opinion either so it opens up the lenses that you can use. Rather than focus on one single lens, we have decided to focus on two for the article. We feel doing it this way will provide the best value as we cover a zoom lens and a macro lens covering the two main options for food photography.
The Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS
This has resulted in a very popular lens that is versatile and has a ton of uses in a number of different photography niches and situations. Many photographers love the lens so much that they have chosen to post their own independent reviews (click here to read some of them) online offering a valuable external insight into the performance of the lens.
The 24-105mm focal length of the lens can be used in almost all situations that you can think of for food photography ensuring that your Sony a6000 always has the capability to capture the photographs that your client needs with great image quality. The lens also comes with the Sony E-mount lens type allowing it to mount directly the camera body of your a6000 without the need for an adaptor. We feel this helps to improve the overall quality of the image as many adaptors seem to have a negative effect on the overall picture quality putting lenses that require an adaptor at a disadvantage.
Although the F4 aperture on the lens can be a bit of a pain for some photography niches, food photography usually has good lighting to help maximize the look of the food. Additionally, with the low noise and high ISO capabilities of Sony, the low light performance of the lens is still pretty decent anyway.
The manual focus and manual zoom rings on the lens are both perfect for tweaking your image to perfection before choosing to capture it. This ensures that you are capturing the best possible photograph for your clients and the ease of use of the manual control rings on the lens helps you quickly tweak the image to perfection without having to waste yours, or your clients time.
If you are looking to add an excellent zoom lens to your camera accessories that will provide your Sony a6000 with some of the best possible image quality available for food photography then you have to seriously consider the Sony FE 24-105mm.

The Sony SEL90M28G FE 90mm f/2.8-22 Macro G OSS
It has much better low light performance than the Sony FE 24-105mm covered above helping fill that niche if for whatever reason you think that you may need this capability for your clients. Additionally, its build quality is excellent providing a solid lens that is very easy to operate even if you are new to using a macro lens. This allows you to get the most out of the lens and product excellent photographs of food using your a6000.
Being a prime lens with a fixed focal length of 90mm can work to your advantage by always offering photographs that are sharp and offer excellent detail for you. On the flip side though, it can be a little restricting as it offers no zoom capability at all limiting the situations you are able to use it in as well as potentially preventing you from meeting your client’s needs.
That said, when booking your client we feel that you should stress your food photography style of capturing the food in all of its beauty while also maximizing the color, detail, and style of the food to help make their food look as beautiful as possible. Also get some clarification on exactly what your client is expecting from you so if needed, you are able to take a zoom capable lens along to the session to keep your client happy.
