In this article, we will be taking a look at what we feel are two of the best external flashes for Canon 80d cameras currently available on the market right now. We have chosen one premium level camera flash that is fairly high priced as well as a flash that is more budget-friendly in an attempt to offer something for all of our readers.
Both of these flash units have carved out their own niche in a heavily crowded market and established themselves since their release. They both offer tons of functionality and great performance relative to their price points in the market, they both have great reputations, and they will both work natively with your Canon 80d without any adaptors.

The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT
The 600EX will fit directly to your Canon 80d’s hot show mount without the need for any additional third-party accessories or adaptors and its navigation and control menu is very simple to use. We feel that the 600EX is as close to a plug and play flash that you’re going to get while still having all of the high-end customization available if you need or want it.
The image to the left shows the control system and user interface systems for the 600EX. If you have recently used any other modern style flash units for your flash photography then you should be relatively familiar with the system anyway. If not, then flash settings have been designed to be as easy as possible allowing you to quickly get used to the flash and it to become second nature.
You are able to get the recycle time for the flash down to as little as half a second too making it ideal for photography niches where you may need to repeatedly activate the flash in quick succession or risk missing the perfect moment. We would like to point out that you should use a set of high-quality batteries or ideally, an external power pack to ensure that the flash unit remains powered as required. Using low-quality batteries with a low recycle setting will burn your battery life out quickly and cause you to have to swap the spent batteries out for fresh ones.
Additionally, the wireless technology in the 600EX has been overhauled when compared to the wireless tech in previous versions of Canon camera flashes. The flash is fully compatible with both radio and optical based remote controls to offer you the greatest wireless functionality available.
All in all, we feel that the Canon 600EX is an outstanding camera flash that does a great job and has a well-deserved reputation amongst the community. In our opinion, as we mentioned earlier, the only real drawback of the 600EX is its price but if you are on a tight budget then the 580EX covered below could be the flash for you and will serve your Canon 80d well.

The Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash
Again, the 580EX II is very easy to use, once programmed you simply mount the flash on your Canon 80D’s hot shoe mount and you are good to go about your flash photography as required.
The image to the right shows the interface and control system for the 580EX flash settings. Although the interface is very basic, it is easy to navigate and allows you to quickly and easily tweak the performance of your flash on the fly as required.
One thing that we would like to point out is that the interface on the 580EX is a little different to most modern camera flashes so there will be a little crossover from the majority of flashed you may have used previously. That said if you are able to put an hour or two into playing with the flash unit we feel you will be able to quickly and easily pick it up and get to grips with it.
The second version of the 580EX has around a twenty percent quicker recycle time without having any effect on the flashes battery life. In addition to this, a few other minor improvements have been made over the first version of the 580EX to further improve its battery life without sacrificing any functionality or performance. Again, the flashes uptime will depend on the settings you choose as well as the type of batteries you choose to use. Ideally, for the best possible uptime, we would recommend that you look at investing in an external power supply to offer superior uptime for the flash unit over what traditional batteries can provide.
All in all, if you are on a tight budget then the 580EX version two will make an excellent addition to your camera accessories for your Canon 80d. The performance it offers for its price point is excellent and allows the 580EX II to compete with other flashes from higher price points without the need to spend the additional cash.
